A face that appears symmetrical will show differences between the right and the left sides. As in this example, a mirror image of the right side will be different from a mirror image of the left side. If the asymmetry is apparent, the etiology of the asymmetry should be determined. It may be a normal anatomical variation or a potential serious problem may be present.
The facial symmetry analysis is designed to record anomalies in the transverse dimension. Facial asymmetries must be detected, recorded and their etiology known before any orthodontic therapy is started. As an example, a functional crossbite and an abnormal mandibular growth pattern may present the same asymmetry in appearance but their treatment modality will be widely different.
You must carefully observe each patient’s face from the front and note any disproportion of the right or left side.
